Loyola on the Potomac is a Retreat House (in the Roman Catholic tradition) founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1958 to serve the greater Washington DC area. It is built on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River and is surrounded by 235 acres of rolling woodland. The retreat house itself is air-conditioned, with 2 Chapels, comfortable lounges and sitting rooms and 70 individual bedrooms (each with a half bath). In addition we have one (1) large conference room and six (6) small meeting rooms. We offer: Directed Retreats, Private Retreats, Days of Prayer, Weekend Ignatian Retreats, Special Ignatian Retreats, School Retreats & Group Retreats.
Loyola also has a small fitness room, bookstore, and hiking trails for our retreatants to enjoy and utilize. There are two outdoor Stations of the Cross pathways for prayer on the property. Internet access is available in our main retreat house.

Why make a retreat?
A retreat is a time to come away from our ordinary activities, to rest, pray, and invite God to renew our spirits. It is an opportunity to gain perspective and to find new meaning for our lives. Loyola on the Potomac offers a variety of retreat experiences: Individually Directed Retreats, Private Retreats, Days of Prayer, Holy Week Triduum Retreat, New Year’s Eve Retreat, and Special Ignatian Retreats on Specific Ignatian Themes. Loyola is also available to host other retreats.
Ignatian Weekend Retreats
The Ignatian Weekend Retreat is conducted in silence and includes generous amounts of time for prayer, personal reflection and the cultivation of a deep relationship with God. Each year the retreat focuses on a different theme. This year’s retreat is entitled:
“Come, Follow Me!”
The life of a disciple of Jesus is a life of commitment. This life is at once beautiful and challenging. Difficulties often arise, whether from success or failure. Nevertheless, Jesus always calls us again. This retreat will invite us to hear Jesus’ call to us now, and to respond to it. The Ignatian weekend retreat is conducted in silence and includes generous amounts of time for personal prayer and reflection. The retreat is open to any adult who wants to grow in friendship with God through prayer. Welcome!
Loyola Sponsored Retreats: Directed & Private Retreats
A directed or a private retreat offers a person time for prayer in silence.
In a directed retreat, a spiritual director is assigned to meet with the person daily. Together they explore the person’s experience of God. The spiritual director will offer encouragement and suggestions for prayer to help the person to enjoy God’s friendship and grow in it. Mass is celebrated daily (except for the opening night). Retreatants should arrive between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm on the first day of the retreat for orientation and dinner.
In a private retreat, the person embraces the silence and serenity of Loyola to enjoy and to deepen his or her relationship with God, without the assistance of a spiritual director.
